Do you find that you’re so keen to cook up a new recipe, but then run out of energy half way through? A friend told me that she saves energy by sitting when she is working in the kitchen.
At first, it sounded strange to me! I mean, sitting in a breakfast nook and enjoying a meal is great, but sitting while cooking didn’t make sense.
I looked closer, and you know what ? She has a valid point!
For many people, cooking isn’t just about the food – it’s about how your body feels while you’re doing it.
Standing for too long, reaching, and moving around the kitchen can quickly turn something simple into something tiring.
The good news?
You don’t have to do everything standing up.
Small changes – like knowing when to sit – can make cooking feel calmer, easier, and much more manageable.
🪑 Sit During Prep (This Is the Big One)
This is where you can make the biggest difference.
Things like:
• peeling vegetables
• chopping ingredients
• mixing or prepping food
These can all be done sitting down.
A simple chair or stool at the counter can take the pressure off your legs and back.
You’re still cooking – just in a way that works better for your body.
Choosing the Right Chair or Stool
If you’re going to sit while cooking, the right chair can make all the difference.
You don’t need anything fancy – just something that feels stable and comfortable.
Look for:
- A chair or stool that doesn’t wobble
- A seat height that lets you work comfortably at the counter
- Something easy to get on and off without strain
If possible, avoid very low or very soft chairs, as they can make it harder to stand up again.
A simple, sturdy stool or dining chair is often all you need.
💡 Small tip:
If you can, choose a chair with non-slip feet or place it on a stable surface so it doesn’t move when you sit or stand. Keeping it positioned close to your workspace also helps avoid unnecessary reaching.
⏱️ Sit Between Steps
Cooking doesn’t have to be one long stretch of standing. It’s not a marathon or a test. You can take it easy and go at a slower pace.
There are natural pauses:
• while something simmers
• while the kettle boils
• while food is in the oven
Use those moments to sit, even if it’s just for a minute or two.
These short breaks really add up.
🍳 Sit for Simple Meals
On low-energy days, keep things even easier.
Meals like:
• eggs on toast
• a simple sandwich
• yogurt with fruit
These can often be made mostly sitting down.
Gather everything you need, and place them in one spot where you can reach it all. Then pull up a chair, and make your meal while sitting!

🧺 Bring Things Closer to You
The more you can reach easily, the less you need to stand and move around.
Try to:
• keep everyday items within arm’s reach
• move prep closer to where you sit
• avoid unnecessary trips across the kitchen
Even small adjustments can reduce effort more than you expect.
💛 It’s Not About Doing Less - It’s About Doing It Differently
Sometimes there’s a feeling that you “should” be standing while cooking.
But there’s no rule that says that. I know it feels odd, but I’ve been standing in my kitchen for decades, and sitting down was quite a change of mindset!
Sitting when you need to doesn’t mean you’re doing less – it just means you’re doing it in a way that supports your body.
Remember!
Cooking should feel manageable, not exhausting.
If sitting for part of it helps you:
• feel more comfortable
• enjoy the process
• keep your independence
