As some of you know, I’m on a mission to sort out my kitchen and make cooking less stressful and more fun.
Today, I’m tackling another area – tons of kitchen tools and gadgets that have accumulated over the years and take up space, clutter up drawers, and are mostly not needed!
Cooking doesn’t have to feel difficult – sometimes, the right tools can make all the difference.
I’ve found that small changes, like using easier-to-handle utensils or simple appliances, can take a lot of effort out of everyday cooking.
It’s not about having more gadgets or tools – it’s about having the right ones.
🔧 Choose Tools That Are Easy to Hold and Use
As we get older, things like grip strength and comfort really matter.
Look for tools that:
• have wider, non-slip handles
• feel light and balanced
• don’t require too much force
Even simple swaps can make cooking feel much easier.
I didn’t realise how much difference this made until I started using tools that felt comfortable in my hand – suddenly everything felt more manageable. Out went the heavy, clunky tools, and in came the easy to manage, lighter tools.
Sometimes, I find that I just grab whatever is nearest. It can be one of those tools that’s a problem. By re-arranging things, easier-to-use tools may just be waiting at the back of the cabinet to be used. No extra money needs to be spent.
🔌 Keep Appliances Simple and Reliable
You don’t need complicated machines with lots of settings.
In fact, simpler is usually better.
Look for:
• easy on/off controls
• clear buttons
• lightweight designs
This is where simple appliances really shine.
If you’re unsure what to choose, I’ve shared a few helpful ideas in my guide to best 4 slice toasters and kitchen gadgets for arthritic hands. This is a big one! Arthritic hands should not slow you down in the kitchen and take away your love for cooking.
🪑 Use Tools That Let You Slow Down
Cooking doesn’t have to be rushed.
Some tools make it easier to:
• prep ingredients while seated
• take breaks without losing progress
• work at your own pace
For example, a simple mixing bowl with a stable base or an easy-to-use hand mixer can make a big difference. These items allow you to sit while using them – makes a big difference.
🧭 Keep Your Most-Used Tools Within Easy Reach
Where you store your tools matters just as much as what you use.
Try to:
• keep everyday items at eye level
• avoid bending or stretching
• store tools near where you use them
To find out more about having a user-friendly kitchen, I have some ideas in how to setup a kitchen layout in a way that supports easy cooking.
I’ve found that once everything had a “home” within easy reach, I stopped feeling tired before I’d even started.
🚫 Avoid Overcomplicating Your Kitchen
It’s easy to end up with too many tools.
But more tools don’t always make things easier.
Try to:
• keep only what you use regularly
• avoid gadgets that do one small job
• focus on multi-purpose tools
A simpler kitchen is often a more comfortable kitchen.
Not sure what to do with old tools and gadgets you no longer use?
If they’re still in good condition, consider donating them – someone else may really appreciate them. If they’re broken, worn out, or just getting in the way, it’s okay to let them go.
🛡️ Use Tools Safely and Comfortably
Safety is just as important as convenience.
Simple habits can help:
• keep surfaces dry and clutter-free
• use stable cutting boards
• avoid rushing
Small changes can help reduce strain and make cooking feel more relaxed.
Making small adjustments at home can help reduce strain and make everyday tasks safer and more manageable.
🌿 Remember!
You don’t need to replace everything in your kitchen. No one can afford to do that!
Start small.
I’ve found that even changing one or two tools made cooking feel easier – and a lot more enjoyable. It’s about comfort, not perfection.
🧾 Simple Tool Checklist
• Choose tools that are easy to grip
• Keep appliances simple and reliable
• Use tools that allow you to work at your own pace
• Store items within easy reach
• Avoid clutter and unnecessary gadgets
Keep it simple – that’s what makes it work.
